It was only a matter of time until someone tried to create a stand up paddle board using kayak technology and materials, and that is exactly what Pelican have done with the SUP Flow 106 Pelican paddle board.

Using their Ram-X registered material, Pelican have created a very tough and durable SUP that will take knocks other boards would wince at!

Features

First and foremost, the Pelican paddle board is tough! This board can be used and abused without too much fear of damage. Obviously we do not recommend throwing it out of a second story window, but if used as intended, the Pelican paddle board could well outlast much more expensive SUP models.

In addition to a being a tough board, the Pelican paddle board also comes with a flexible 5” rubber fin (which helps resist damage from rocks and other shallow water hazards).

Dimensions

The board is sized well for those just starting out on a stand up paddle board, through to more experienced users. The Pelican paddle board measures in at ten feet 6 inches (10’6”) long, by thirty two inches wide (32”). The board is six inches thick (6”), which gives it extra buoyancy and stability out on the water.

The Pelican paddle board weighs in at 48lb (22kg), which is a little on the heavy side, and can be difficult to carry long distances without a rest in between – especially if you do not have long enough arms to wrap around the board!

There is a maximum weight limit of 230lb (104kg) when using the board, but purchasers have mentioned using the board successfully over this weight when used in tandem (two at once on the board).

Materials

The Pelican paddle board is made with Ram-X™ material technology, which was developed in 1978. Its great flexibility offers exceptional shock resistance, and this flexibility increases with heat or with the craft’s prolonged exposure to the sun (but may also slightly warp the hull). The warping disappears when the hull cools and never affects the craft’s performance.

The hard plastic, similar to a plastic canoe or kayak, is great for rocky shorelines and shallow rock bottom waters.

Accessories

The Sup Flow 106 Pelican paddle board comes with an anti-slip cushioned deck pad – great for keeping a secure foothold whilst paddling, and also comfort. It also comes with elastic bungee cords across the bow, Integrated rail ramps for additional leverage and better balance, carry handles and a drain plug (water can accumulate between a SUPs hull and deck as a result of condensation – this is normal for SUPs, and is not a defect).

Performance

So long as you aren’t expecting extreme performance, then almost anyone can use this board, from beginner through to advanced users. The Pelican paddle board is designed mainly for flat water paddling, and we wouldn’t recommend using it in the surf.

The Sup Flow 106 Pelican Paddle Board Summary

The Sup Flow 106 Pelican paddle board is a strange beast when first looked at. It doesn’t have the smooth feel of a regular fibreglass/eps board (common materials that hard boards are made from), but feels more in line with a kayak or canoe. It more than makes up for this in durability, though. It is the sort of board we would feel happy paddling in almost any condition, from rocky lakes right through to floating icebergs (disclaimer: please be careful if paddle boarding through icebergs)!

If you are just starting out with stand up paddle boarding, you will be glad to know you cannot break this – at least, not if used as it was designed for. Its six inch (6”) width means it is very stable in water, and it would not feel out of line by describing this stand up paddle board as a bit of an amphibious tank, albeit in a good way!
